Today marks the 64th death anniversary of A. K. Fazlul Huq.

The country is observing the 64th death anniversary of A. K. Fazlul Huq today.

Widely known as Sher-e-Bangla, or the “Tiger of Bengal,” Huq passed away on 27 April 1962 in Dhaka. He was born on 26 October 1873 at his maternal uncle’s residence in present-day Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, while his ancestral home was in Chakhar village, about 14 miles from Barishal town.

Over a distinguished political career, Huq held several key positions, including president of the All-India Muslim League (1916–1921), mayor of Calcutta (1935), prime minister of undivided Bengal (1937–1943), chief minister of East Bengal (1954), home minister of Pakistan (1955), and governor of East Pakistan (1956–1958).

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages paying tribute to the veteran নেতা.

In his message, the president described Huq as an exceptionally wise, courageous, and prudent statesman who served in many গুরুত্বপূর্ণ roles. He noted that Huq dedicated more than half a century to the welfare of the people as a politician and social reformer.

Highlighting his legacy, the president called him a pioneer of the political landscape of undivided Bengal and a leader of farmers, workers, and the masses. Huq founded the Krishak Praja Party in 1936 and later the Sramik-Krishak Dal in 1953.

In his message, the prime minister said Huq ushered in a new chapter in subcontinental politics by presenting the Lahore Resolution in 1940. He noted that the resolution remains widely discussed among historians and reflects Huq’s visionary leadership.

The prime minister also underscored Huq’s deep commitment to farmers, describing him as a true প্রতিনিধি of Bengal’s কৃষকসমাজ. He said Huq was among the first leaders to recognise the strong link between politics and Bengal’s agriculture-based economy and worked to protect farmers’ interests and ensure their representation.

Various socio-political and cultural organisations have taken elaborate programmes to mark the day, including placing wreaths, offering prayers at his grave, holding milad mahfils, and organising discussions.
