PM calls for collective efforts to make Bangladesh greener
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday called for collective efforts to make Bangladesh greener, urging children to plant at least one tree every year.
“We all should make an effort to make our country greener,” he said while inaugurating a nationwide tree plantation programme at government primary schools at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre (BCFCC) in the capital.
The programme was organised by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
To mark the launch of the initiative, the Prime Minister planted a neem sapling. As part of the campaign, nearly 200,000 saplings are being planted simultaneously at government primary schools across the country.
Addressing the children, Tarique Rahman encouraged each of them to plant at least one sapling annually, whether at school or near their homes.
“My little friends, you should try to plant one sapling each every year. It may be at your school or around your home. Wherever you think appropriate, plant a sapling,” he said.
He also urged students to learn about the environmental benefits of trees by researching how much oxygen they produce and the different ways they support human life.
“When the trees planted at your school grow, they will provide you with shade. When you become tired, you will be able to rest under the trees,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that trees planted at home would improve the environment by providing fresh air, cooling the surroundings and creating a more pleasant living space.
Calling the occasion a memorable one, he said, “Today is a memorable day. Together, we have planted a large number of trees on the soil of Bangladesh.”
After inaugurating the programme, Tarique Rahman visited an exhibition showcasing nature- and environment-themed projects prepared by primary school students.
Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Education Mahdi Amin, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman and senior government officials attended the event.
