Jamaat and its allies threaten to launch an indefinite sit-in in front of the Chief Adviser’s Office starting Sunday
The parties are staging demonstrations to press their five-point demand and plan to mobilize their strength on Thursday to counter the Awami League’s ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ programme.
Jamaat-e-Islami and seven allied parties have threatened to begin an indefinite sit-in in front of the State Guesthouse Jamuna — the office of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus — on Sunday if their demands are not fulfilled.
Jamaat Nayeb-e-Amir Prof Mujibur Rahman announced the programme at a joint press conference held at Al Falah Auditorium in the capital’s Maghbazar area on Wednesday afternoon.
The parties have been urging the government to meet their five-point demand, which includes holding a referendum on the implementation of the July Charter before the upcoming general elections in February and issuing the corresponding implementation order.
Prof Mujibur Rahman said the eight parties would first hold a meeting on the prevailing political situation on Sunday, followed by a press briefing at Al Falah Auditorium, after which they would march towards State Guesthouse Jamuna to begin their indefinite sit-in.
He added that the eight-party alliance would also take to the streets nationwide on Thursday to resist the Awami League’s “Dhaka Lockdown” programme, declared by the now-banned political party.
The coalition will resume its demonstrations on Friday to press its five-point demand, staging processions in all divisional cities and district towns, Prof Mujibur Rahman further announced.
