ICT to deliver verdict today in Chankharpul crimes against humanity case
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is set to deliver its verdict today in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed in the capital’s Chankharpul area on 5 August 2024, when six people were brutally killed.
ICT Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim said the verdict will be aired live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and streamed on the verified Facebook page of the Office of the Chief Prosecutor, International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh.
The judgment was initially scheduled for 20 January but was later deferred to 26 January as it could not be finalised within the stipulated time.
The accused include former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman; former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty; former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam; former assistant commissioner of the DMP’s Ramna zone Mohammad Imrul; former inspector Md Arshad Hossain; and constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam. The first four accused remain at large and are being tried in absentia.
The prosecution submitted formal charges against all eight accused on 25 May 2025, marking the first set of charges filed at the ICT in cases stemming from the July–August mass uprising.
The six victims — Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah — were killed in Chankharpul on 5 August 2024.
Earlier, on 20 April 2025, the tribunal’s investigation agency placed a 90-page probe report before the court.
