The interim government clarified today that the recently issued notification banning the activities of the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated bodies will not impede the freedom of expression of other political parties or individuals.

On May 12, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification under the Anti-Terrorism Act, suspending all operations of the AL, including its affiliated, associate, and like-minded groups, until the completion of ongoing trial proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal.

According to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, the ban encompasses all forms of activity — including publications, media and online campaigning, social media presence, and the organisation of rallies, meetings, and conferences. The restrictions apply to all leaders, members, and activists of the AL and its affiliated entities.

However, the government stressed that this directive does not infringe on the rights of others to freely express their views. Individuals or political groups are still free to share logical, constructive, and lawful analyses or opinions about the AL, its actions, or the government’s measures against the party.

The statement noted that over the past 15 years — especially during the student-led uprising last year — serious allegations have been raised against the AL and its affiliated organisations. These include claims of attacks, enforced disappearances, killings, torture, terrorism, and crimes against humanity.

As a result, multiple cases are currently underway against AL leaders and activists in the International Crimes Tribunal and in the country’s criminal courts. Since August 5, 2024, the AL and its associates have allegedly carried out terrorist activities, including violent attacks and incitement against students and civilians involved in the uprising. These actions, the statement said, were aimed at obstructing justice, spreading fear, and undermining national security.

The notification was issued in response to these developments, with the aim of preserving public order and ensuring justice, the government added.
