BNP Standing Committee to Convene This Evening on Presidential Nomination

The BNP National Standing Committee, the party's highest policymaking body, is set to meet on Saturday evening to discuss its nominee for the country's next President, along with the prevailing political situation and key organisational issues.

According to multiple party sources, the closed-door meeting will primarily focus on determining the party's stance for the upcoming presidential election.

Party insiders said the process of electing Bangladesh's next President is expected to be completed within August. In light of this timeline, Standing Committee members are expected to deliberate on potential candidates for the constitutional post.

Senior BNP leaders indicated that the final decision on the party's presidential nominee is likely to be made by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Speaking at a programme in Bogura on 26 July, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the Standing Committee would decide, in line with the Constitution and existing laws, whether the party should nominate one of its own leaders or back a non-partisan candidate.

While senior leaders have avoided publicly naming possible contenders, party insiders said several prominent figures have emerged during internal discussions.

Among them, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is widely regarded as a frontrunner, owing to his more than a decade as secretary general, extensive political experience, clean public image and broad acceptability across the political spectrum.

Other names reportedly under consideration include Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.

Party policymakers said the presidency should not be viewed as merely a ceremonial position, stressing that the office carries significant constitutional responsibilities, particularly during times of national crisis. They said the party intends to take a careful and considered approach before making its final choice.

Following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on 24 July, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been serving as Acting President in accordance with the Constitution.

The Constitution requires that a new President be elected within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.
