Govt Clarifies Cancellation of Proposal to Appoint Physical Education, Music Teachers in Primary Schools

The government today clarified that the proposal to appoint physical education and music teachers in government primary schools was canceled after a review by the Secretaries’ Committee found shortcomings in the project’s planning and implementation feasibility.

“Reports published in the media regarding the cancellation of the proposal to appoint physical education and music teachers in government primary schools have drawn the attention of the interim government,” said a statement issued by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing this evening.

The statement noted that an initial decision had been made to appoint equal numbers of physical education and music teachers in 2,500 clusters of primary schools across the country. However, based on the Secretaries’ Committee’s recommendation, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education decided to withdraw that plan.

According to the statement, the committee found that the project’s design was flawed. Appointing such a limited number of teachers would yield little benefit at the primary level and create disparities, given that there are 65,569 primary schools nationwide.

“It would not be possible to implement the proposed appointments in most schools. If appointments were made on a cluster basis, a single teacher would have to serve over 20 schools simultaneously, making it unfeasible to manage working hours,” the statement added.

The committee further suggested that, if funds permit in the future, creating dedicated teaching positions for such subjects in all schools and appointing teachers accordingly could be considered.
