Government employees on Wednesday threatened fresh protests on Thursday if the authorities fail to take action to repeal the newly enacted Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. Movement leaders reiterated that demonstrations would continue until the ordinance is fully scrapped.

Nurul Islam, co-chairman of the Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum, stated, “We have already scheduled conventions across all eight divisions. Senior government officials have betrayed our trust under the guise of dialogue. We are demanding a 50 per cent dearness allowance. The bureaucrats who are backing this fascist ordinance must be removed.”

Echoing these demands, Forum president Badiul Kabir reaffirmed that protests would persist until the ordinance is entirely withdrawn.

On Wednesday, protesters gathered in front of Building No. 6 of the Secretariat, once again voicing their opposition to the ordinance, according to a UNB report.

Nazrul Islam, another movement leader, said, “We are disciplined government employees. But if the ordinance is not revoked, we will escalate the movement further starting Sunday.”

The government issued the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 on May 25, introducing provisions that allow dismissal of public servants—without departmental proceedings—in four specific disciplinary cases, requiring only a show-cause notice.

The ordinance draft was approved at the Advisory Council meeting on May 22.

Since May 24, unions representing government officers and staff at the Secretariat have been staging joint protests, condemning what they describe as a “repressive and undemocratic ordinance” and demanding its repeal.
