New Yorkers elected young leftist Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor on Tuesday, while Democrats also captured two key state governor races — delivering an early warning to President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 midterms.

The Democratic sweep across major contests nationwide lifted party morale after months of political headwinds from Trump’s return to the White House, while sending shockwaves through Republican ranks.

Mamdani’s victory came despite intense attacks on his progressive agenda and Muslim heritage from Trump, business elites, and conservative media.

Democrats’ wins in Virginia and New Jersey signaled a potential shift in voter sentiment as the nation heads into a pivotal election year when control of Congress will be at stake.

“Democrats are smoking Donald Trump and Republican extremists throughout the country,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on X, declaring that “the Democratic Party is back.”

A state lawmaker representing Queens, Mamdani campaigned on tackling the city’s soaring cost of living, promising free bus travel, affordable childcare, and city-run grocery stores. His grassroots campaign combined a relatable style, social media outreach, and robust door-to-door organizing.

“The next and last stop is City Hall,” Mamdani said in a viral X post featuring a subway train pulling into City Hall station.

The 34-year-old self-described socialist rose from relative obscurity to upset former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary — and defeated him again in the general election.

Supporters packed a historic Brooklyn concert venue to celebrate, awaiting Mamdani’s speech in a festive atmosphere.

Trump had intervened late in the race, calling Mamdani — who will become New York’s first Muslim mayor in January — a “Jew hater.”

Republican Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, finished third after accusing Cuomo of sabotaging his own chances. “It’s typical of Andrew — he’s always blaming others for his failures,” Sliwa told AFP.

Prominent business figures like Bill Ackman vocally opposed Mamdani, pouring funds into rival campaigns, while conservative outlets such as The New York Post launched near-daily attacks.

Voter turnout surged, with 1.45 million ballots cast by 3 p.m. — surpassing totals from the 2021 mayoral election.

Mamdani’s rapid rise has deepened the Democratic Party’s internal debate over its future direction — between its centrist establishment and a growing leftist wing.

“There’s a civil war in the Democratic Party,” Cuomo said after voting. “You have an extreme radical left run by socialists challenging what they call moderate Democrats. I’m a moderate Democrat.”

Syracuse University political scientist Grant Reeher noted that Mayor-elect Mamdani faces “an uphill battle at the center of all these nasty political controversies,” warning that “everybody’s got their knives out — and it’s a very difficult city to govern.”

At Cuomo’s campaign event, attendees described a somber mood, with some speculating that Trump might deploy the National Guard to New York, while others blamed Sliwa for splitting the center-right vote.

Elsewhere, Democrats notched additional victories: in New Jersey, former Navy pilot Mikie Sherrill defeated Trump-backed businessman Jack Ciattarelli, while in Virginia, Abigail Spanberger unseated a Republican incumbent.

Former president Barack Obama, who had campaigned for both Sherrill and Spanberger, hailed the results, saying, “We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.”
