Home Adviser: Ensuring a Fair Election Is Not Solely the Responsibility of Law Enforcement

The interim government's Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Choudhury, has emphasized that creating a conducive environment for elections is not the sole responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
He underscored that the Election Commission, local administration, on-duty officials, and political parties all have essential roles to play in ensuring a smooth electoral process.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday after visiting the Industrial Police Headquarters and Uttara East Police Station in Dhaka, the adviser said the government is fully prepared for the upcoming national election and is taking all necessary steps to maintain law and order and conduct a fair vote.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to holding an inclusive, impartial, and peaceful election with participation from all political parties. Addressing recent incidents of mob violence, Choudhury warned that no offenders will be spared. “Action is being taken against everyone involved. Regardless of their influence or position, those responsible will be identified and held accountable,” he stated.
Referring to recent outbreaks of mob violence in several areas, he mentioned that the government is maintaining a strict stance. Citing a case in Rangpur, he said seven individuals have already been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to detain all others linked to the incident. “Anyone found involved in future incidents will also face legal consequences,” he added.
Highlighting the role of modern media and technology, the adviser noted that such tools have made it easier to quickly detect crimes and take swift action.
On industrial security, Choudhury acknowledged that the Industrial Police is currently facing manpower shortages, even as the number of factories and industries in the country continues to rise. He assured that the government is actively working to enhance the force’s capacity by increasing staffing and resources.
The adviser was accompanied by the chief of Industrial Police, Additional IGP Gazi Jasim Uddin, along with other senior police officials.
