Army firm on upholding law, sovereignty: AHQ
The Bangladesh Army on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty while standing beside the people.
“The army has been working tirelessly to protect the country’s sovereignty and the lives and property of its citizens,” said Colonel Md Shafiqul Islam of the Army Headquarters' Military Operations Directorate during a media briefing at Dhaka Cantonment.
He said the army was also maintaining strict vigilance to ensure the security of key national assets and installations, as part of broader efforts to stabilise the overall situation.
Colonel Islam warned that the army would take tougher measures against mob violence, public disruptions, and destruction of public property in the days ahead.
He noted that, following directives from Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, military personnel were continuing to work in coordination with relevant ministries, law enforcement agencies, local administrations, and the media to maintain law and order.
The army, he said, was also ensuring the security of diplomatic missions and working to preserve communal harmony across the country.
Islam informed reporters that a total of 4,790 people injured in the July mass uprising received treatment at Combined Military Hospitals (CMHs) in cantonments across the country, with 22 of them still under care at the Dhaka CMH.
As part of the ongoing nationwide anti-crime drive, the army arrested 562 more suspected criminals in the past two weeks and seized 26 illegal firearms along with 100 rounds of ammunition.
Since the deployment began, army personnel have detained 15,646 individuals and confiscated 9,692 illegal firearms and 2,860,854 rounds of ammunition.
