Rezaul Karim Mallick Removed as DB Chief Amid Controversy

Rezaul Karim Mallick has been relieved of his duties as the chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Confirming the development on Sunday, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Talebur Rahman stated that the move was an internal reassignment, with the official transfer order issued from DMP Headquarters the previous day.

"No replacement has been appointed yet," he added.

The reshuffle comes in the wake of controversy surrounding the recent detention of model and Miss Earth Bangladesh winner Meghna Alam. On April 7, DB personnel detained her from her residence in Dhaka. Three days later, on April 10, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court ordered her to be held for 30 days under the Special Powers Act of 1974.

Her arrest triggered significant public backlash, prompting the DMP to release an official statement on April 11 defending the action.

According to the statement, Meghna was detained through proper legal procedures based on allegations that she posed a threat to national security, disseminated misinformation targeting prominent individuals to damage inter-state relations, and was allegedly involved in an economic conspiracy against the country.

The DMP rejected claims of abduction, asserting that Meghna was lawfully taken into custody and retains the right to legal redress.

A member of the 17th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police), Mallick joined the force in 1998 and has served in various units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
