Family Feud in Muradnagar Escalates into Brutal Assault Caught on Camera

A long-standing dispute between two brothers in Cumilla’s Muradnagar upazila took a disturbing turn when it culminated in a vicious assault on a woman — an incident that was filmed and widely circulated on social media, sparking public outrage.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday announced the arrest of 28-year-old Md Shah Poran, identified as the alleged mastermind behind the June 26 attack. He was detained Thursday night (July 3) from the Kabila Bazar area of Burichang upazila, said Lt Col HM Sazzad Hossain, commanding officer of RAB-11, during a media briefing in Dhaka.

A mobile phone used to distribute the assault footage was also recovered from Poran’s possession, RAB confirmed.

According to the elite force, Poran orchestrated the attack to exact revenge on his elder brother, Fazor Ali, who had slapped him during a village arbitration in Baherchar two months earlier. Locals told RAB that the siblings had a history of conflict, and tensions had been simmering for some time.

Seeking retaliation, Poran allegedly formed a group using the messaging app Imo and waited for the right moment. Around 11:30pm on the night of the incident, Fazor entered the victim’s house under the guise of collecting interest on a Tk 50,000 loan he had earlier provided to her mother.

About 20 minutes later, Poran and a group of accomplices — including Abul Kalam, Onik, Arif, Suman, Ramzan, and 8–10 unidentified others — stormed into the house. They physically assaulted the woman and coerced Fazor into participating in the abuse, RAB said.

The attackers recorded the entire incident and later shared the footage online, causing widespread shock and alarm in the community.

The victim’s family filed a case on June 29 with Muradnagar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act.

So far, six people — including the accused rapist Fazor — have been arrested in connection with the case.

During initial interrogation, Poran reportedly confessed to planning the attack and ordering the filming and dissemination of the footage as an act of revenge.

He is now being handed over to Muradnagar police, while efforts continue to track down the remaining suspects.
