Attorney General: No Restrictions on Khaleda's Participation in Upcoming Election

Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman stated today that there is no legal impediment preventing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from contesting the upcoming general election. "The false and conspiratorial cases filed against Khaleda Zia have been resolved, removing any legal barriers to her participation," he said during a shadow parliament session organized by Debate for Democracy at the FDC in Dhaka.

He further commented, "If convictions for the July murders had been carried out, many Awami League leaders, including Sheikh Hasina, would have been barred from participating in elections." Additionally, he noted that the participation of the Awami League is not essential to ensuring inclusive elections.

The attorney general criticized those responsible for undermining democracy, stating, "Individuals who have sabotaged the election process, violated the constitution, and infringed on people's rights will be judged by history as villains and face imprisonment through proper legal proceedings."

He emphasized that the martyrs of the July uprising would be eternally honored as heroes, highlighting that the revolution was inspired by the Liberation War and the vision of a Bangladesh free from inequality. "Although efforts are being made to erode the achievements of this revolution, no conspirators will succeed," he asserted. He expressed hope that the revolutionaries would remain steadfast in their pursuit of human rights.

The event was chaired by Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, Chairman of Debate for Democracy. Kiron presented ten recommendations for ensuring fair and transparent elections, as reported by UNB. These recommendations include:

  1. Prosecuting individuals involved in electoral crimes, including members of the Election Commission, for their roles in controversial elections.
  2. Enforcing strict legal measures to bar corrupt individuals, money launderers, bank defaulters, and others engaged in financial misconduct from participating in elections.
  3. Repealing laws that restrict media freedom during the election period.
  4. Establishing an independent Election Commission free from political interference and external pressure.
