Flight operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have been significantly disrupted after several Middle Eastern countries closed their airspace amid ongoing regional tensions.

A total of 24 flights were cancelled at the Dhaka airport on Wednesday (11 March) due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, raising the number of cancellations to 391 over the past 12 days.

Amid security concerns linked to the conflict, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan temporarily closed their airspace from 28 February, directly affecting flights to and from Bangladesh.

According to sources at the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the cancelled flights on Wednesday included two operated by Kuwait Airways, four by Air Arabia (Sharjah), two by Gulf Air (Bahrain), four by Qatar Airways, four by Emirates, four by Jazeera Airways (Kuwait) and four by flydubai.

CAAB sources said flight cancellations have continued since the airspace closures began. The number of cancelled flights was 23 on 28 February, 40 on 1 March, 46 on 2 March, 39 on 3 March, 28 on 4 March, 36 on 5 March, 34 on 6 March, 28 on 7 March, 28 on 8 March, 33 on 9 March and 32 on 10 March.

With Wednesday’s cancellations, the total number of scrapped flights since 28 February has reached 391, causing significant disruption for passengers travelling between Bangladesh and the Middle East.
