A shipment of 5,000 tonnes of diesel from India is scheduled to arrive today
A shipment of 5,000 tonnes of diesel from India is scheduled to arrive today.
The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has announced that 5,000 tonnes of diesel are being imported from Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam, India.
The fuel shipment is expected to reach Bangladesh on Tuesday (10 March) through a cross-border pipeline.
The information was confirmed to the media by Muhammad Morshed Hossain Azad, general manager of BPC’s Trade and Operations Division.
According to BPC sources, the pumping process from India has already begun.
The government has taken the initiative to maintain adequate fuel reserves and ensure an uninterrupted supply across the country. Officials say importing diesel through the pipeline will help reduce both transportation costs and delivery time.
Earlier, Bangladesh formally proposed importing an additional 50,000 tonnes of diesel over the next four months through the same pipeline. On Sunday, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury made the request to Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma.
Bangladesh also has an existing agreement to import 180,000 tonnes of diesel from Numaligarh Refinery by December this year. However, the supply had been suspended amid tensions in Dhaka–Delhi relations.
The total cost of the deal is estimated at about Tk1,462 crore, with part of the funding to be provided by BPC and the remainder expected to come from bank loans.
