Yao Wen, China’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, has invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit China and conveyed warm congratulations and greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

The envoy extended the invitation during a courtesy call on the prime minister at his Cabinet Division office at the Bangladesh Secretariat at 12:30pm today.

Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir shared the details while briefing reporters at the Secretariat after the meeting.

Responding to a question, he said the schedule for the visit was not discussed. “The Prime Minister is currently focused on several key domestic priorities. Once those are addressed and he begins foreign visits, China’s invitation will be given due importance,” Humayun said.

He added that the Chinese government acknowledged the strong mandate secured by the newly elected prime minister with a two-thirds majority. According to him, the ambassador primarily visited to congratulate the new government formed through the enthusiastic participation of the Bangladeshi people in the election.

Describing Bangladesh–China ties as historic, Humayun said the robust relationship dates back to the tenure of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Over the years, China has emerged as one of Bangladesh’s key and dependable development partners.

He noted that the current government aims to further advance the development cooperation achieved in recent years.

Terming the meeting a courtesy call, Humayun said no specific issues were discussed. However, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to elevating bilateral relations to new heights and strengthening development cooperation while safeguarding the interests of the people of both countries.
