Xi Jinping says China will play a “constructive role” in advancing peace talks in the Middle East
Xi Jinping says China will play a “constructive role” in advancing peace talks in the Middle East.
Xi Jinping on Tuesday pledged that China would play a “constructive role” in advancing peace efforts in the Middle East, while calling for respect for the sovereignty of nations in the conflict-hit region, according to state media.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, where he outlined proposals aimed at maintaining peace in the Middle East and the Gulf.
The comments came after a first round of talks between Iran and the United States in Pakistan over the weekend ended without a breakthrough. US Vice President JD Vance said the responsibility now lies with Iran to move the process forward.
“Xi Jinping stressed China’s principled position of promoting peace and encouraging dialogue, and reiterated that it will continue to play a constructive role,” state news agency Xinhua reported.
According to state broadcaster China Central Television, Xi presented four proposals to help advance peace in the region. He emphasised that the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Gulf countries must be respected, adding that the authority of international law should not be applied selectively.
Although he did not provide detailed specifics, Xi also highlighted the importance of upholding a UN-based international order and strengthening coordination on security and development.
The Abu Dhabi royal is among several leaders from countries affected by the Middle East conflict visiting Beijing this week. Among them are To Lam and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who are seeking to deepen cooperation on the conflict as well as bilateral ties.
Russia’s foreign ministry said Lavrov and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi would discuss the Middle East situation during their meeting, following a recent call in which they agreed to work together to ease tensions.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is also visiting Beijing this week, primarily to discuss trade relations, though he noted that China could play an “important role” in the Middle East.
