The government is considering approaching the International Criminal Court (ICC) to facilitate the return of Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said.
The government is considering seeking the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) intervention to bring back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both fugitive convicts currently in India.
“We will soon hold a meeting to determine whether we can approach the ICC regarding the return of these convicted individuals,” Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Prof Dr Asif Nazrul said at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.
The briefing outlined decisions made at a meeting of the Council of Advisers, held at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon and chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Prof Asif Nazrul said the government will also send a formal letter to India seeking the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death by International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) in a crimes against humanity case.
“We are requesting the extradition of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who have been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity,” he stated.
He added: “As they are now convicted and sentenced to death, we believe India has an increased responsibility to return them in line with the Bangladeshi people’s expectation of justice. We are reminding India of its obligations under the extradition agreement, and will communicate this through the letter.”
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also attended the briefing.
