BNP urges calm, rejects speculation over Khaleda Zia’s health
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is receiving all necessary medical care, her personal physician and party Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Tuesday, urging the public not to be swayed by rumours about her health.
Speaking at a press briefing outside the main gate of Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara, Dhaka, he outlined the former prime minister’s current condition and the treatment she is undergoing.
Khaleda Zia has been admitted to Evercare Hospital since 23 November, after tests detected a lung infection. The BNP previously described her condition as critical. She has been under close monitoring in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) since 27 November.
A medical board headed by Evercare specialist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder—comprising both local and international doctors—is supervising her treatment.
Meanwhile, security at Evercare Hospital has been tightened since Monday night. Barricades have been set up on both sides of the hospital’s main entrance, and police officers have been deployed, restricting public gatherings in the vicinity.
Police personnel on duty said the barricades were installed around 2am to prevent unnecessary crowds from gathering near the hospital.
Hospital sources added that the heightened security measures are intended to ensure smooth movement for patients and families, reduce congestion around the facility, and maintain safety for Khaleda Zia.
