Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has praised the long-standing contributions of the Bangladesh Armed Forces to national security, development, and nation-building.

Highlighting their consistent support to citizens during crises, he urged the forces to play a historic role in ensuring a peaceful and memorable national election and referendum scheduled for February. “I am proud to see the progress of the armed forces and their lasting contributions to our national security, development, and nation-building efforts. Your commitment to protecting the nation has been exemplary,” he said.

He made the remarks while addressing the graduation ceremony of the National Defence Course (NDC) and Armed Forces War Course (AFWC) 2025 at the National Defence College in Mirpur Cantonment on Wednesday.

Yunus commended the armed forces for their steady role during natural disasters, political unrest, and pandemics, noting that their dedication to public welfare has remained unwavering. He also said their participation in UN peacekeeping missions continues to enhance Bangladesh’s standing on the global stage.

“We must play a historic role in the upcoming national election and referendum, ensuring they become not only landmark events but also peaceful and festive occasions,” he said. “Make it a celebration for all voters—one the nation will remember with pride as a turning point.”

At the outset of his speech, the chief adviser paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War during this “special month of victory” and honoured the sacrifices of people from all walks of life. He also remembered those who contributed to the July Revolution, expressing deep respect for the students and citizens who lost their lives or were injured in pursuit of a new Bangladesh.

Addressing BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s health, Yunus called on the nation to pray for her recovery. “On this joyous graduation day, let us pray together for the speedy recovery of former prime minister and our national leader Begum Khaleda Zia, who is fighting for her life,” he said.

Congratulating the graduating officers, he described the completion of the NDC and AFWC 2025 courses as a major personal and professional milestone. These programmes, he said, prepare participants for higher responsibilities by deepening their understanding of national security, policy-making, strategy, and development.

Reflecting on the mission of the National Defence College, Yunus said it was founded to develop leaders capable of navigating an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. With Asia emerging as the new economic centre of gravity, he said Bangladesh’s strategic location offers significant opportunities.

“As future leaders, you must use this geostrategic advantage to drive sustainable growth and development,” he said.

He noted that the National Defence Course trains officers in strategic-level thinking, while the Armed Forces War Course strengthens their grasp of operational and tactical dimensions. The courses’ focus on issues like terrorism, climate change, and cyber threats, he said, reflects the most pressing global challenges.

Addressing international graduates, Yunus extended warm greetings and hoped they leave Bangladesh with lasting friendships and a deeper appreciation of its culture. He encouraged them to act as goodwill ambassadors for Bangladesh in their respective countries.

He further praised NDC’s growing role in shaping leaders beyond the military, noting the participation of senior officials from the civil administration, foreign service, police, Ansar, and VDP. Joint participation, he said, promotes understanding, bonding, and the exchange of ideas.

Yunus expressed appreciation for the commandant, faculty, staff, diplomats, experts, and guest speakers who contributed to the success of the courses, and acknowledged the support of the country that facilitated the study tour.

He concluded by expressing confidence that the National Defence College would continue to uphold its motto, “Security Through Knowledge,” and equip graduates with the expertise needed to address emerging national and international security challenges.
