Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday said restoring peace and security in public life—through improved law and order and strict anti-corruption measures—is a top priority for his government.

Speaking at the Independence Award 2026 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, he said the new administration had taken office amid a fragile economy weakened by corruption, poor governance and a deteriorating security situation.

“Restoring peace and security in public life by improving law and order and strictly controlling corruption is one of our foremost priorities,” he said.

Reflecting on the country’s journey since independence, Rahman noted that while Bangladesh has made significant progress over the past 55 years, shortcomings remain.

Calling for unity, the BNP chief urged people to avoid revenge and unnecessary conflict in building a self-reliant and prosperous nation. Quoting Ziaur Rahman—“National unity is our strength, division is our weakness”—he said differences in opinion must not turn into hostility.

He warned that “anti-Bangladesh elements” remain active and called for vigilance.

At the ceremony, the prime minister paid tribute to martyrs of the Bangladesh Liberation War and expressed respect for those injured or persecuted in struggles from 1971 to the 2024 uprising, saying their sacrifices continue to inspire the nation.

Highlighting the significance of the Independence Award, introduced in 1977 by Ziaur Rahman, he said it recognises individuals and institutions for outstanding contributions to the country.

Rahman also stressed the need for modern, job-oriented education to address employment challenges for the country’s large working-age population, noting that both the economy and education system had suffered in recent years.

He emphasised that development is not possible without ensuring women’s safety, pointing out that women make up more than half the population.

The prime minister said his government has begun implementing reform commitments outlined in its manifesto and the July Charter, pledging to deliver on them fully.

Despite global pressures, he added, the government is maintaining stability by subsidising fuel prices to ease public hardship and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary expenditure.

Earlier, Rahman handed over the Independence Award to 15 distinguished individuals, including former prime minister Khaleda Zia, and five institutions for their contributions at the national level.
