Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the re-excavation work of the nearly extinct Dharar Canal, also known as Boilor Canal, in Dariarpur under Trishal, a waterway closely associated with the memory of his father, former president Ziaur Rahman.

The prime minister reached Trishal by road from Dhaka at around 2:15 pm. Despite stormy weather, he unveiled the project plaque and formally launched the excavation work by cutting soil with a spade. He also planted a palm sapling beside the canal.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam, local lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman Liton, and Mymensingh Zila Parishad Administrator Syed Emran Saleh Prince were present at the event.

The 3.1-kilometre canal was originally excavated on September 6, 1979, under the initiative of former president Ziaur Rahman, but gradually became nearly extinct over the years.

As part of the government’s nationwide canal restoration programme, the re-excavation project was launched to revive the historic canal.

After inaugurating the work and planting the tree, Tarique Rahman addressed local residents from a stage set up beside the canal.

Party leaders and activists welcomed him with loud applause, while local women, marginal farmers, and children also gathered enthusiastically to greet the prime minister.
