Officials and employees of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) today began an indefinite shutdown, demanding the removal of the NBR chairman and an end to what they describe as "vindictive transfers."

Following four days of pen-down strikes, the protest escalated into a full-scale suspension of services, despite government appeals to call off the programme.

International passenger services remain the only exemption from the ongoing work stoppage.

The shutdown, organised under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council, commenced at 9:00am, drawing widespread participation from NBR officials across the country. The move has severely disrupted export-import operations and hindered revenue collection.

As economic activities face mounting disruptions, major business chambers are expected to address the crisis in a press conference later today.

In response, heavy deployment of security forces—including the Army, Police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)—was observed in and around the NBR headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Protesters alleged that entry to and exit from the building had been restricted, with large numbers of demonstrators stationed at the main gates of the NBR compound.
