"Municipal Tax Fair: DNCC Threatens Legal Action Against Tax Defaulters"

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz issued a warning on Sunday to politically influential individuals, stating that legal action will be taken unless they settle their unpaid taxes and dues. According to a DNCC statement, Azaz emphasized that failure to pay would result in DNCC officials visiting their residences for necessary legal measures.

The warning came during the inauguration of the "Municipal Tax Fair 2025" at the DNCC Zone-3 office in Mohakhali, Dhaka. Azaz highlighted the improvements in the tax payment process, including the introduction of an online payment system for various municipal taxes and services. He noted that, based on public hearings, tax collections are significantly lower than the demand for essential city infrastructure like roads and drainage systems.

He also pointed out that DNCC provides services to all citizens, including those who fail to pay taxes. Azaz criticized corporate entities such as five-star hotels, private universities, and hospitals, which utilize top-tier facilities from the DNCC but still avoid paying taxes.

Regarding the ongoing crisis with DNCC's permanent employees, Azaz stressed that adequate tax revenue is essential for paying staff salaries and securing permanent jobs. To address the need for increased revenue, the DNCC has organized the Municipal Tax Fair.

Currently, around 25,000 people owe arrear dues of Tk 100,000 each, and many individuals remain off the taxpayer list. The DNCC Municipal Tax Fair 2025 will run until May 30 across various locations in its 10 zones, offering citizens a 7.5% rebate at the fairs.
