Nation Observes National Revolution and Solidarity Day

The National Revolution and Solidarity Day is being observed across Bangladesh today in a befitting manner.

On this day 50 years ago, the country embarked on a new journey through a joint uprising of the armed forces and the people, emerging from a period of political chaos and uncertainty.

On November 7, 1975, thousands took to the streets of Dhaka and other parts of the country to mark the moment that saw Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman rise as a national leader. The nation once again heard his iconic voice over radio — “I am Zia speaking” — reminiscent of his wartime address during the 1971 Liberation War, rekindling hope and unity among the people.

Spontaneous processions filled the streets, echoing chants such as “Soldiers and people are brothers,” and “Long live Bangladesh.” Soldiers and civilians marched together, symbolising solidarity and the spirit of national unity.

The historic day became a turning point in Bangladesh’s history, later commemorated as National Revolution and Solidarity Day. It marked the beginning of a new national awakening, as Major General Ziaur Rahman took charge amid a deep political crisis, steering the nation away from foreign conspiracies and internal unrest.

Following the events of November 7, 1975, Bangladesh witnessed the rise of a distinct national identity and a renewed sense of self-dignity, with Ziaur Rahman emerging as a symbol of hope and patriotism. Despite repeated attempts to erase his legacy, his name remains deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.

To mark the day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has undertaken various programmes, including hoisting the party flag at its central office in Naya Paltan and across the country.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with senior leaders, will pay tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 10:00 am. Later, a procession will be brought out from the party’s central office at 3:00 pm, to be inaugurated by the BNP Secretary General.
