Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, is still recovering from serious facial and leg injuries sustained in the airstrike that killed his father at the outset of the war, three sources close to his inner circle told Reuters.

According to the sources, the attack on the supreme leader’s compound in Tehran left his face disfigured and caused significant damage to one or both legs.

The 56-year-old is said to be mentally alert and gradually recovering. He is participating in high-level meetings via audio conferencing and remains involved in key decisions, including matters related to the war and negotiations with Washington.

Concerns over his ability to govern come at a critical moment for Iran, as sensitive talks with the United States are set to begin in Islamabad.

The accounts offer the most detailed picture yet of his condition, though Reuters has not independently verified them. His location and health remain largely unknown to the public, with no images, videos, or audio recordings released since the February 28 airstrike and his appointment as successor on March 8.

There has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the extent of his injuries. However, state television previously referred to him as a “janbaz,” a term used for those seriously wounded in conflict.

The reports align with remarks by Pete Hegseth, who said in March that Khamenei had been wounded and possibly disfigured. A source familiar with U.S. intelligence assessments also suggested he may have lost a leg.

The strike that injured him also killed his father, Ali Khamenei, along with several family members. No comment has been provided by the CIA or Israeli officials.

Analysts say that regardless of his injuries, Khamenei may struggle to exercise the same level of authority as his father. Alex Vatanka noted that while he represents continuity, it could take years for him to consolidate power, with institutions such as the Revolutionary Guards playing a dominant role in the interim.

Sources suggest that images or a public appearance could come within one to two months, depending on his recovery and the security situation. Until then, his absence continues to fuel speculation and online discussion, including viral posts questioning his whereabouts.
