Bangladesh could face substantial financial losses if it fails to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with the fallout affecting the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), national team players, and the tournament’s wider commercial ecosystem.

Merely by taking part in the tournament, Bangladesh would earn around Tk 4 crore, roughly equivalent to $300,000. A top-12 finish would boost that figure to more than Tk 5.5 crore, or about $450,000.

An official withdrawal would hit players hardest and most immediately. They would forgo match fees, performance-related bonuses, and any share of prize money, resulting in a significant drop in personal earnings. Bangladeshi cricketers earn a minimum of Tk 2.5 lakh per match, income that would be lost entirely if the team does not compete.

The BCB would also suffer a major financial blow. The ICC provides participating teams with fees ranging from $300,000 to $500,000—around Tk 4–6 crore in local currency—which the board would miss out on altogether.

As one of international cricket’s most lucrative events, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup offers substantial financial incentives. Bangladesh’s absence would therefore carry serious monetary consequences for both the board and the players.

Beyond direct revenues, non-participation could also hurt broadcast and sponsorship income. In the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh matches typically draw strong television audiences. Without them, viewership could dip, weakening advertiser interest and reducing sponsorship value.

Former cricketers and commentators have already warned that fewer Bangladesh fixtures could diminish the tournament’s overall commercial appeal.

The potential scale of these losses becomes clearer when set against the prize-money structure of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which had the largest prize pool in the event’s history. The ninth edition was staged across nine venues in the West Indies and the United States, with 20 teams competing over 28 days, making it the biggest T20 World Cup to date.
