High Court overturns Babar's conviction, nullifies 17-year prison sentence in arms case
Babar was taken into custody on May 28, 2007, and spent nearly 17 years in prison

The High Court has acquitted former state minister for home affairs, Lutfuzzaman Babar, in a 2007 case related to the alleged recovery of illegal weapons from his residence during the caretaker government.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by a bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasrin Akhter. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented Babar in court.
The case was registered at Gulshan police station on June 3, 2007, following claims by authorities that illegal weapons and ammunition were seized from Babar’s bedroom in Gulshan on May 28, 2007.
Subsequently, on October 30, 2007, Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal-9 sentenced him to 17 years in prison. Babar appealed the verdict in the High Court the same year.
Babar was arrested on May 28, 2007, and remained incarcerated for nearly 17 years. Over the years, he faced multiple convictions but was ultimately acquitted and granted bail in those cases.
Following his release from Dhaka Central Jail on January 16, this arms case remained under a High Court stay order, which has now led to his full acquittal.
