Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has admitted to his role in crimes against humanity committed during last year’s July uprising, widely known as the July massacre.

Appearing before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday, Mamun stated, “I was involved in the July killings. I want to testify as a prosecution witness voluntarily.”

At the time of the massacre, Mamun was serving as the country’s top police official.

Earlier in the day, the tribunal formally framed charges against three accused—including deposed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina—in connection with the July events.

Rejecting their discharge pleas, the three-member tribunal—led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, with Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury—ordered the trial to proceed.

This officially marks the beginning of formal trial proceedings against Sheikh Hasina and the two other accused in the July massacre case.
