Five charges have been brought against Sheikh Hasina, Kamal, and Mamun
Five charges have been brought against Sheikh Hasina, Kamal, and Mamun.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) is scheduled to deliver its verdict today in a crimes against humanity case against three accused — including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina — for their alleged superior command responsibility during the July Mass Uprising.
The five charges brought against Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun are as follows:
-
Incitement through provocative speech:
After Sheikh Hasina’s press briefing on July 14, 2024, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Abdullah Al-Mamun and other senior officials of the then administration allegedly abetted, assisted, and were complicit in carrying out a coordinated and violent crackdown on unarmed student protesters. -
Ordering the use of lethal force to exterminate protesters:
Sheikh Hasina is accused of directing the extermination of student demonstrators using helicopters, drones and lethal weapons. The former home minister and former IGP are alleged to have enabled and executed this order by issuing instructions to the law enforcement units under their authority. -
Killing of BRUR student Abu Sayed:
This charge relates to the July 16, 2024 killing of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayed, who was shot multiple times in the chest at close range. -
Chankharpul killings:
The fatal shooting of six unarmed protesters in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024 has been listed as a separate count of crimes against humanity. -
Ashulia mass killing:
The prosecution also highlighted the shooting deaths of six student protesters in Ashulia on August 5, 2024 — five of whom were allegedly burned after being killed, while the sixth was reportedly set on fire while still alive.
