Bangladesh’s 2026 elections will be a defining moment for the century, the Chief Adviser said.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has characterised the upcoming national elections as a pivotal moment that will shape Bangladesh’s trajectory for the next century, describing it as a “century-defining election” with consequences that will resonate for generations.

He made the remarks during a view-exchange meeting with Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners (DCs) on preparations for the 2026 national election and the accompanying referendum.

“The elections we are entering are unlike any we have ever faced. This is, without question, the election of the century. It will set Bangladesh’s course for the next hundred years,” Professor Yunus said at the meeting held at Shapla Hall of the Chief Adviser’s Office.

He explained that the 2026 polls will feature two major components — the regular five-year parliamentary election and an unprecedented nationwide referendum that will give citizens the chance to decide the country’s long-term direction.

“One election determines the next five years, but the referendum will guide the next one hundred,” he said, stressing the unmatched importance of this dual voting process.

Through this referendum, he added, Bangladesh would be able to define its place in the world and choose the path it intends to follow over the next century.

Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid conducted the session, while Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharf Uddin Ahmed Choudhury, newly appointed Bogura DC Toufiqur Rahman and Tangail DC Begum Sharifa Haque joined the discussion.

Professor Yunus urged officials not to approach the election as a routine five-year exercise, noting that it will be the first national vote since the people’s uprising. “This election will transform that uprising into governance. We must view it differently,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the young officers would show dedication and resolve in fulfilling the aspirations that emerged from the July 2024 Uprising. “In past elections, we all knew what roles government officials played,” he said. “But this time, the task before us is entirely different.”

Referring to past electoral controversies, he said previous five-year cycles often turned into mockery, while this election stands apart in its purpose and significance. “We must put special focus on this one,” he emphasised.

Calling for absolute sincerity, the Chief Adviser cautioned that any mistake would carry consequences. “There is no room for error or confusion. This election will give the nation a new life and a new birth. And we, the organisers, are like midwives ensuring that this new future arrives safely and beautifully.”

He added that a successful referendum would mark the beginning of a century-long national journey. “This century-long journey must begin in a spirit of joy and celebration. It is our responsibility to create that environment,” Professor Yunus said.
