FIFA President Infantino supports Saudi Arabia's World Cup bid
The Gulf nation controversially secured the right to host the World Cup during a FIFA Congress in December.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia, as well as his ties with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Saudi Arabia was controversially granted hosting rights at a FIFA Congress in December, despite concerns over its human rights record, treatment of migrant workers, and the criminalization of same-sex relationships.
The selection process faced criticism from the Norwegian football federation. However, speaking in Belfast on Friday, Infantino emphasized that the decision was made collectively.
"There was a Congress decision, uniting the entire world," he stated. "I believe it was a positive step for football, ensuring global representation in the coming years. In 2026, we head to North America, followed by South America, Africa, and Europe in 2030, then back to Asia for 2034. The FIFA Congress approved this after a thorough review."
Infantino also addressed questions about his relationship with Trump and his family.
Trump’s daughter Ivanka participated in the FIFA Club World Cup draw in December, and Infantino had attended Trump’s inauguration in 2017.
When asked about his ties to the former president, Infantino responded, “A close relationship with the president is crucial for a successful World Cup. This year, we are hosting the first-ever 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Next year, we have the World Cup in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Let’s not forget that when bidding took place, Trump was already in office.”
