China to Import Mangoes, Guavas, and Jackfruits from Bangladesh
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, recently conveyed his government's interest in importing mangoes, guavas, and jackfruits from Bangladesh. This intent was expressed during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka.
At a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy today, CA Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared this development. He noted that the Chief Adviser had previously requested the Chinese government to import these fruits from Bangladesh. Now, China has shown keen interest, raising hopes for expanded export opportunities.
"This presents a significant opportunity, particularly for large-scale jackfruit exports," Alam said. "Additionally, demand for Bangladeshi mangoes is strong among Chinese consumers, creating further prospects for mango exports."
Alam emphasized the need to meet export standards, noting that the World Food Programme (WFP) is providing $4 million along with technical support to ensure quality compliance.
He also expressed optimism that trade relations between Bangladesh and China would strengthen through the Chief Adviser’s upcoming visit. Professor Yunus is set to embark on a four-day trip to China starting March 26.
Government Recruitment and Relations with India
During a Council of Advisers meeting today, it was disclosed that 172,000 government positions remain vacant. The Chief Adviser has directed authorities to take necessary steps to fill these vacancies, Alam stated.
Addressing a question on Bangladesh-India relations, Alam remarked, "Our relations with India are strong. Despite visa complications, trade between our countries has increased over the past seven months. We aim for positive ties, but they must be built on fairness, dignity, and equality."
Healthcare Collaboration with China
On another note, Alam highlighted that four hospitals in Kunming have been designated to serve Bangladeshi patients seeking medical treatment.
"This is encouraging news," he said. "However, our Chief Adviser is advocating for Chinese hospital chains to invest in Bangladesh. If successful, this would bring high-quality Chinese healthcare to our doorstep."
Professor Yunus is actively inviting major Chinese healthcare companies to invest in Bangladesh, with healthcare investment being a key focus of his upcoming visit.
CA Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar and Apurba Jahangir were also present at the briefing.
