CEC promises free, fair elections, pledges to break from era of ‘managed polls’
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Tuesday said the Election Commission is determined to demonstrate its ability to hold a free, fair and credible election, free from the allegations that have overshadowed previous polls.
“We want to show that we are capable of conducting a proper and credible election and free ourselves from all past allegations regarding free, fair and neutral polls. This can only be achieved through strict enforcement of the rule of law,” he said at a press briefing on election management ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election and referendum.
At the beginning of the briefing, Nasir Uddin offered prayers for the departed soul of Osman Hadi and expressed condolences to his bereaved family. Other election commissioners and senior field administration officials were also present.
Addressing government officials, the CEC said the commission aims to set a clear example of the rule of law. “The law must be blind and applied equally to all. You have been given a great responsibility. If we fail to carry out our duties properly at this critical time, we will be accountable to future generations,” he said.
Referring to criticism of past elections, Nasir Uddin noted that election managers have collectively been blamed for undermining the electoral system through so-called ‘managed elections’. “We want to remove this stigma. Those working at the field level and keeping the system operational have a crucial role to play,” he added.
Calling on field-level officials to act with courage, the CEC said their resolve would strengthen the commission. “When you uphold the law firmly, it gives me courage. Whenever you take bold steps to enforce the law in accordance with rules and regulations, the Election Commission will stand by you,” he assured.
He also urged officials not to seek to please individuals but to ensure discipline through lawful authority. “You do not need to please me. You must strictly manage your subordinates through the law and ensure the system functions properly. Any deviation must be closely monitored and prevented,” he said.
The briefing focused on strengthening election management and ensuring a disciplined, transparent and lawful electoral process.
