Prof Muhammad Yunus to Visit China on March 26 to Strengthen Bangladesh-China Ties
- Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus is set to visit China on March 26, aiming to elevate Bangladesh-China relations, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
- On March 27, Prof Yunus will address the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), focusing on Asia’s evolving global role.
- Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, met Prof Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna to discuss the upcoming visit.
- The Boao Forum, often referred to as the "Davos of the East," will see participation from top Asian leaders and global business executives.
- Prof Yunus is expected to hold meetings with CEOs of major companies on the forum’s sidelines.
- A bilateral meeting between Prof Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled in Beijing on March 28, where issues of mutual interest will be discussed.
- Bangladesh seeks to strengthen ties with China to transform itself into a manufacturing hub, Shafiqul noted.
- The government is keen on attracting Chinese firms to relocate their factories to Bangladesh.
- Last year at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Prof Yunus engaged with the Chinese Foreign Minister, seeking investments in Bangladesh’s solar energy sector.
- In response, two Chinese companies, including leading solar PV supplier Longi, plan to establish offices and manufacturing plants in Bangladesh.
- During his visit, Prof Yunus will deliver a lecture at Peking University (PKU), where he will be awarded an honorary doctorate.
- He will also tour China’s high-tech parks and engage with hospital chains to explore joint ventures for setting up healthcare facilities in Bangladesh.
- Chinese investments in Bangladesh have increased significantly since August 5 last year, and further investments are expected following Prof Yunus’ visit.
