The European Union (EU) has pledged support to Bangladesh in conducting elections that adhere to international standards. This assistance will include a substantial financial package along with expertise and experience-sharing.

“The EU will support the conduct of elections in this country in line with international standards,” stated EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, on Sunday.

He made this remark while speaking to reporters following a meeting between a five-member EU delegation and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the latter’s office in the capital.

The EU ambassador emphasized that their support will not only include financial aid but also involve sharing their expertise and experience in election management in Bangladesh.

Additionally, he noted that the EU is keen on deploying an election observation mission in the country.

Miller conveyed two key messages through the Bangladesh Election Commission. First, he reaffirmed the EU’s commitment as a strong partner of Bangladesh, particularly during this critical phase of transition.

Regarding the second message, he stated, “The EU seeks to strengthen its partnership with Bangladesh across all dimensions.”

He further mentioned that the EU is working to support the interim government's reform agenda, ensuring the election aligns with the expectations of Bangladeshi citizens as expressed last year and in ongoing discussions.

Following the meeting, CEC AMM Nasir Uddin stated that the EU desires elections that meet international standards. “They want a free, fair, and credible election. This is also our commitment to the nation, and we fully support this objective,” he said.

He affirmed that the Election Commission (EC) is operating with neutrality and transparency. “We are conducting our work in a highly transparent manner.”

Nasir Uddin further mentioned that the EU delegation inquired whether the EC had sufficient funds for the election. In response, the EC assured them that financial constraints were not an issue, as a budget proposal had already been submitted to the government.

“They clearly conveyed their willingness to support us in every possible way,” the CEC concluded.
