Bangladesh's Diplomatic Balance Between Europe and the United States
Bangladesh Shifts from US-China Balance to Include Europe and Russia

Strains in US-Europe Ties Prompt Strategic Recalibration by Bangladesh
-
The traditional alliance between the United States and Europe is witnessing emerging fractures. Since Donald Trump’s presidency, a shift from long-held consensus on trade and security has prompted new policy directions, impacting global dynamics — including Bangladesh.
-
A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remarked, “Europe and the US are increasingly divergent on key global issues such as trade, security, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.”
-
He emphasized, “While the earlier priority was balancing relations between the US and China — which implicitly included Europe — the current scenario necessitates simultaneous balancing among the US, Europe, and Russia.”
Historical Context of the Division
-
NATO, established post-World War II to counter the Soviet Union, was led and funded significantly by the US, providing Europe with both security and economic advantages.
-
However, Donald Trump’s presidency brought a transactional foreign policy approach. Tariffs were levied on European goods, and demands increased for Europe to shoulder greater defense responsibilities.
-
Additionally, the US's efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war have largely sidelined European participation, raising concerns among European nations over being excluded from decisions shaping their future.
Bangladesh’s Diplomatic Strategy Amid Global Shifts
-
In a recent UN session, the US and Europe submitted separate resolutions addressing the Russia-Ukraine war. Bangladesh supported the US resolution but abstained from the European one.
-
A foreign ministry representative noted, “After engaging with both sides, Bangladesh voted based on national considerations and conveyed its reasoning to Europe, which acknowledged our position.”
-
He added, “When US and European policies aligned, balancing was straightforward. The emerging divide, however, requires nuanced diplomacy.”
Importance of Both Sides to Bangladesh
-
Both the US and Europe remain vital to Bangladesh for economic, strategic, and diasporic reasons — serving as major export destinations, sources of investment, and homes to significant Bangladeshi populations.
-
“We maintain active engagement with influential global actors, including figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump, while also keeping consistent dialogue with the EU and European nations,” said another official.
-
He concluded by affirming that Bangladesh continues to prioritize its national interest, adapting its foreign policy in response to evolving global alignments.
