Bangladesh has called for accelerated global efforts toward nuclear disarmament.
Bangladesh has urged faster global action on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, calling on nuclear-armed states to honour their commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The appeal was made at the 11th Review Conference of the NPT held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York yesterday, according to an official handout received today.
Speaking during the general debate, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said that even after eight decades of the United Nations, the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons remains unfulfilled.
He cautioned that ongoing nuclear proliferation continues to pose a serious threat to global peace and security, while also hindering development efforts worldwide. Emphasising Bangladesh’s consistent position, he noted that the country has long supported both nuclear and conventional disarmament and has voluntarily remained non-nuclear despite being located in a region with nuclear-armed states.
He called on nuclear-weapon states to meet their legal obligations under Article VI of the NPT and stressed the need for universal adherence to disarmament agreements.
The ambassador also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to advancing global disarmament through dialogue, confidence-building measures, and collective efforts toward a safer, nuclear-free world.
