The interim government is facing challenges on multiple fronts.

The interim government has reversed its decisions about a dozen times in its two months in office, raising questions about its resolve. Political analysts view this as a sign of inconsistency, inexperience, and lack of determination, reflecting the challenges the government faces in balancing competing demands. However, according to senior sources within the interim administration, many of these reversals were driven by public pressure and social media reactions amid a shifting political environment.

The government's U-turns often seemed influenced by the need to navigate diverse pressure groups and political interests. During the initial weeks of his tenure, Prof. Muhammad Yunus faced constant agitation from various factions, drawn to his empathetic leadership. Whether it involved appointing a senior secretary or a deputy commissioner, heading the Constitutional Reform Commission, or naming a public prosecutor, the government repeatedly retreated from its original decisions to balance practicality with public sentiment.

Prof. Al Masud Hasanuzzaman, a government and politics professor at Jahangirnagar University, characterized these reversals as signs of "indecision." He noted that, given the time-sensitive nature of many decisions, mistakes were made. He further pointed out that while the government needed qualified individuals to run the administration, it often had to yield to public pressure, sometimes acting on incomplete information.

Commenting on the recent appointment of deputy commissioners (DCs), a high-ranking official close to the council of advisers explained that, despite thorough verification, the Secretariat witnessed intense protests, leading the government to cancel the appointments of eight DCs. The official added that while the role of personal secretaries to ministers is typically bureaucratic, many view these posts as being tied to loyalty to the ruling party, which pressured the government to reverse its decisions.

The frequency and significance of these missteps are notable. For instance, AKM Matiur Rahman was promoted to secretary of the shipping ministry on September 30, only to be demoted to an officer on special duty (OSD) within three days. His appointment came under scrutiny after his books on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman went viral, leading to backlash and the government's change of heart. Despite this, the top official described Rahman as a brilliant officer.

In another case, retired officer Ilahi D Khan was appointed as the secretary to the food ministry on September 30, but the contract was canceled within nine hours due to allegations of corruption by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Similarly, the appointment of Mohammad Khorshed Alam Khastagir as ambassador to Poland was revoked within 10 days, reportedly due to his role during an uprising.

Further examples include the quick replacement of Shahdeen Malik as head of the Constitutional Reform Commission with Prof. Ali Riaz, and the resignation of economist Masrur Reaz as chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) just four days after his appointment.

Public backlash also influenced the appointment of lawyer Ehsanul Haque Samaji as the public prosecutor for the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court. His appointment prompted protests from pro-BNP lawyers, leading to Samaji declining the role the next day.

Other notable instances include Majedur Rahman's decision to decline his position as an independent director on the Dhaka Stock Exchange board and filmmaker Ashfaque Nipun’s refusal to join the censor board, calling for its abolishment. Following this, the government dissolved the Bangladesh Film Censor Board on September 22, replacing it with the Bangladesh Film Certification Board.
