Bangladeshi universities have once again struggled to break into the top 800 of the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

Despite having 16 institutions represented in the rankings, none from Bangladesh managed to secure a place within the top 800. In contrast, neighboring countries India and Pakistan performed better, with India securing 22 spots and Pakistan 9 in the top 800 globally. The rankings, released on Wednesday, are based on key performance indicators such as teaching quality, research output, citations, and international student representation.

Among the Bangladeshi universities, five—Jahangirnagar University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Daffodil International University, Jessore University of Science and Technology, and North South University—were ranked in the 801–1000 range. Other notable institutions, including the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Brac University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), were placed in the 1001–1200 range.

Further down the list, Jagannath University ranked below 1500, reflecting the disparity in global competitiveness among Bangladeshi institutions.

At the top of the rankings, the University of Oxford held on to its first-place position, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second and Harvard University in third.
