Adani Group clarifies that it did not request full payment from Bangladesh within a 7-day period
Adani states that it has been working closely with the Bangladesh Power Development Board to address and resolve any issues
In response to reports about its payment deadline for Bangladesh’s outstanding bills, the Adani Group clarified that it has not demanded full payment within seven days. In a press release issued on Sunday by its PR firm, Adani stated it has been fully cooperating and working closely with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to resolve any issues, following a report in an Indian newspaper about a payment deadline.
Adani affirmed that it has not demanded the full payment of $800–$850 million in seven days and is actively collaborating with BPDB to address outstanding issues.
Previously, the *Times of India* reported that Adani Power India had warned it would suspend electricity supply to Bangladesh if payment issues were not resolved by November 7. Amid outstanding dues, Adani Power had previously set an October 31 deadline for BPDB to settle the amount and secure a $170 million letter of credit (LC) to guarantee future payments.
While BPDB attempted to arrange the LC through Krishi Bank, it reportedly did not meet the terms of the power purchase agreement, partly due to a shortage of available dollars, according to a *TOI* source.
Due to the unpaid dues, Adani Power Jharkhand reduced its supply beginning October 31, exacerbating Bangladesh’s power shortages. As of Friday, Power Grid Bangladesh’s (PGB) website indicated that Adani’s Godda plant in Jharkhand was supplying 724 megawatts out of its 1,496MW capacity.
A senior BPDB official, speaking anonymously to UNB, confirmed that Adani Power recently sent a letter to request payment of outstanding dues from Bangladesh.
