Italy’s Vice Minister for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, reaffirmed Italy’s support for Bangladesh's political and economic reforms on Wednesday, urging Bangladesh to collaborate in addressing illegal migration.
"Italy and Bangladesh share a close relationship, with many Bangladeshi citizens living in Italy who play an important role in our country," she said, stressing the importance of working together to curb illegal migration. Tripodi reiterated the Italian government’s strong backing for Bangladesh’s Interim Government in its ongoing reform efforts.
Her comments came during a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna, where they discussed matters of mutual interest.
"We hope your reform efforts are successful. As our Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni mentioned to you at the UNGA, you can always count on us," she told the Chief Adviser.
Dr. Yunus emphasized the importance of expanding legal migration, highlighting Bangladesh’s commitment to fighting human trafficking and facilitating the formal migration of skilled workers.
The Chief Adviser expressed gratitude for Tripodi’s visit, noting its significance at a pivotal time as the Interim Government works to stabilize the country following the student-led uprising in July that ended years of misrule.
“Your visit comes at a historic moment for us, right after what happened in July,” he remarked. "We are tackling several challenges, including revitalizing the economy and restoring trust in our political system."
In response, Tripodi assured that Bangladesh would receive "full support" from Italy, emphasizing Italy's ongoing commitment to supporting the Bangladeshi people and the Rohingya Muslims.
She also mentioned that many Italian companies were keen on investing in Bangladesh, particularly in the textile, energy, and defense sectors. The Chief Adviser urged Italy to consider relocating factories to Bangladesh and promoting youth exchange programs between the two nations.
Tripodi’s visit marks the first ministerial visit from any European Union country since the Interim Government's formation in August last year. Senior Secretary and Principal Coordinator for SDG Affairs Lamiya Morshed and other officials were also present at the meeting.
