EC Adds ‘Shapla Koli’ to Election Symbol List
The Election Commission has officially included the new symbol in its list through a gazette notification.
The Election Commission (EC) has amended the Election Conduct Rules to include ‘Shapla Koli’ (Water Lily Bud) in its list of election symbols.
For years, the National Citizen Party (NCP) had been seeking the ‘Shapla’ (Water Lily) as its election symbol. However, the EC had previously stated that it could not allocate the symbol since it was not part of the approved list.
On Thursday, the EC issued a gazette notification officially adding ‘Shapla Koli’ to the list.
The notification, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, stated that the amendment was made under the authority of Article 94 of the 1972 Constitution.
It also mentioned that sub-rule (1) of rule 9 under the Election Conduct Rules, 2008, has been replaced with a new sub-rule—allowing any contesting candidate, subject to availability, to be allotted one of the listed symbols, except those suspended under clause 20.
