The Election Commission (EC) has started hearings on objections to the proposed delimitation of constituencies.

The Election Commission (EC) has begun hearings on objections to the proposed redrawing of parliamentary constituencies ahead of the 13th national elections.

The sessions, led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin and the four election commissioners, started on Sunday at the EC Secretariat in Dhaka.

In his opening remarks, Nasir Uddin pledged that the delimitation process would be conducted with professionalism and impartiality.

The four-day hearing schedule opened with cases from 18 constituencies in the Cumilla region. Individuals who filed objections, along with their authorised representatives, have been invited to present their views.

Sunday’s hearings focused on objections related to Brahmanbaria-2, 3, and 5; Cumilla-6, 9, 10, and 11; Noakhali-1, 2, 4, and 5; Chandpur-2 and 3; Feni-3; and Lakshmipur-2 and 3, according to the EC.

The draft delimitation plan, published on 30 July, proposed boundary changes across all 300 constituencies to better reflect voter distribution. Notably, Bagerhat’s constituencies would be reduced from four to three, while Gazipur’s would increase from five to six.

By 10 August, the commission had received 1,760 objections affecting 83 constituencies. Hearings are set to continue until 27 August, after which the final decisions on constituency boundaries will be announced.
