Tarique: Stand together against autocracy to bring back democracy.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday urged political parties to remain united against autocracy in order to restore democracy and implement reforms aligned with the aspirations of the people.

"Let us safeguard the unity that enabled us to overthrow autocracy. Our foremost priority will be to uphold and strengthen this unity in the days ahead and establish the democracy that the people of this nation seek," he stated while addressing an iftar gathering virtually.

Tarique Rahman emphasized that BNP and allied parties will work together to implement the people’s desired reforms through dialogue. "Let this be the commitment we make at this iftar gathering," he added.

The 12-party alliance hosted the event at a city hotel in honor of politicians and distinguished citizens.

Tarique noted that while political parties may have differing ideologies, they are united in their commitment to Bangladesh, its people, and democracy.

"There are no divisions among us on fundamental issues… we must preserve this unity at all costs. Differences of opinion will arise, but we must address them through discussion," he said. He urged anti-fascist political parties to refrain from actions or statements that could aid in the resurgence of autocrats and their supporters.

He reminded political parties of the sacrifices made over the past 15 years, as many colleagues and loved ones lost their lives in street movements—particularly during the July-August mass uprising—to restore democracy and political rights.

He pointed out that, for the people of Bangladesh, democracy means free and fair elections where individuals can vote without fear. "This is also how democracy is recognized worldwide," he said.

Tarique reiterated that BNP, along with other democratic parties, proposed a 31-point plan for state reforms two and a half years ago to drive meaningful change.

"Unfortunately, we are now witnessing a situation where reforms and elections are being framed as opposing forces. Some argue that reforms must be completed before elections can occur. Personally, I believe that reform is a continuous process—once something is completed, it can no longer be called reform," he explained.

He also pledged improvements to the education system, ensuring its shortcomings are addressed over time. "We will continue to enhance the system… The healthcare sector will also undergo reforms and improvements. As circumstances evolve, we will strive for further progress," he assured.

The event was presided over by the chief of the 12-party alliance, Mostafa Jamal Haider, with its spokesperson, Syed Ehsanul Huda, serving as the moderator.
