Tarique Rahman pays his respects at the grave of Shaheed Osman Hadi
He is scheduled to proceed with his planned activities, including taking part in the National ID registration process at the Election Commission.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday visited Dhaka University and offered fateha at the grave of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho, marking the third day of his return to the country.
He also paid his respects at the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, located adjacent to the Dhaka University Central Mosque.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir arrived at the graveyard earlier to accompany Tarique Rahman during the visit.
Tarique Rahman departed his Gulshan Avenue residence at around 10:40am in a white bulletproof SUV and reached the Dhaka University campus at approximately 11:15am under tight security.
Following the visit, he is scheduled to go to the Election Commission office to complete his National Identity Card (NID) registration and enlist as a voter.
He will later visit Mahbub Bhaban in Dhanmondi, his father-in-law’s residence, before heading to Evercare Hospital to see his ailing mother.
However, his planned visit to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), popularly known as Pangu Hospital, to meet those injured in the July 2024 mass uprising has been cancelled.
Sharif Osman Hadi, a leader of Inquilab Moncho and a prospective candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on December 12 while travelling by rickshaw on Culvert Road in Puratan Paltan, a day after the Election Commission announced February 12 as the date of the next national election.
He was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18. Hadi was laid to rest beside the grave of Kazi Nazrul Islam on December 20.
Aged 32, Hadi was a prominent figure in the July 2024 uprising and served as the spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Thursday morning after nearly 17 years abroad. His return has drawn widespread attention and strong emotions among BNP leaders, activists and supporters across the country, with party leaders describing it as historic.
