Security agencies have been placed on heightened alert ahead of the ICT’s upcoming verdict in a case involving Hasina.
Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that all law enforcement agencies are on maximum alert ahead of tomorrow’s verdict in the crimes against humanity case concerning the July Uprising murder charges against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
Speaking to reporters at the Barishal District Police Lines after a views-exchange meeting with field-level officials, he said security measures have been tightened nationwide to avert any untoward incident.
“All law enforcement agencies are now fully prepared ahead of the verdict,” he said.
Jahangir also expressed confidence in the field administration’s readiness to conduct the upcoming parliamentary elections peacefully.
“The field administration is ready to hold the next general election in a free, fair and festive atmosphere,” he said, adding that the country’s overall law and order situation remains stable.
He stressed that a fair election depends not only on law enforcement, but also on the Election Commission and political parties. “No one will be able to disrupt the upcoming general election if people remain focused on voting,” he added.
On the recent clashes between transport workers and students over bus fares, the Home Adviser said the matter would be resolved amicably through dialogue, and instructed law enforcement to remain vigilant to prevent further escalation.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Monjur Morshed Alam, Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam and Superintendent of Police Sharif Uddin were among those present at the meeting.
