Ramisa Murder Case Verdict Today: Accused Sohel, Swapna Brought Before Court
The verdict in the case over the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in Mirpur's Pallabi area is scheduled to be delivered today (Sunday), with prime accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter facing judgment.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children is set to pronounce the verdict after concluding arguments were heard on Thursday in the presence of the accused.
Bench assistant Pankaj Peter Gomez confirmed the matter, according to court sources.
Ahead of the verdict, Sohel Rana was brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court lock-up at around 8:49am on Sunday, while Swapna Akter was produced from prison shortly beforehand.
Both accused, along with lawyers representing the prosecution and defence, are expected to be present in court when the verdict is delivered at 11:00am.
The case has reached the verdict stage just 19 days after the killing of Ramisa, making it one of the fastest-tried criminal cases in recent times.
The case was filed shortly after midnight on 20 May following the incident on 19 May. On 24 May, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court.
The same day, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashraful Haque accepted the charge sheet, declared the case ready for trial and ordered its transfer to the Dhaka Metropolitan Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children. The tribunal, presided over by Judge Masrur Saleqin, subsequently took cognisance of the charges.
Despite overlapping with the Eid-ul-Azha holiday period, special measures, including the suspension of judicial leave, were taken to ensure the speedy disposal of the case.
