UN Secretary-General Guterres calls US strike on Iran a dangerous escalation
US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had struck three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday, declaring that Tehran "must now agree to end this war." His remarks followed days of speculation over whether Washington would join its ally Israel in the ongoing bombing campaign against Iran.
Meanwhile, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said on Sunday it would establish a ministerial contact group to maintain regular communication with international and regional stakeholders in support of de-escalation efforts following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
In a joint statement issued after a meeting of the 57-member bloc's foreign ministers in Istanbul, the OIC strongly condemned "Israel's aggression" against Iran and stressed the "urgent need to halt Israeli attacks," expressing grave concern over the worsening situation. The statement also called on the international community to adopt deterrent measures against assaults on Iran and to hold Israel accountable for "the crimes committed."
